Earshot
Hide-and-seek in the dark, played by ear. The hunter is blind, and everything you do makes noise.
Earshot takes a game people already play with their eyes closed and moves it indoors, in the dark. One player is the blind hunter. The rest try to reach an exit without being heard.
Runners wear a bell on one ankle. The faster you move, the harder you change direction, the louder it rings. Moving quietly is safe and slow. And nobody knows when the phone in their pocket is going to go off.
The hunter carries a cane. Tapping it briefly reveals the shape of the room ahead — but everyone hears the tap. The sound you make to find people is the same sound that tells them where you are.
It is being built to work alone as well. The AI players do not read positions off the map; they hear the same sounds you make. A faint noise sends them searching a wide area. A loud one brings them straight to you.
Systems and features
- Ankle bell — your speed and sudden turns are your volume
- Cane sonar — reveals the shape of the space, and gives your own position away
- Phone alarm — goes off at a random moment, with one second of warning to its owner only
- Escape through the live exit, or get tagged — the active exit changes each round
- AI players — they judge by sound, not coordinates. The quieter you are, the wider they miss
Current status: Prototype. The sound simulation and AI players work; the audio and the spaces are being built. No release date yet.
Ideas and feedback are welcome
If this project makes you want to say something — a direction, a doubt, a feature idea — send it over. Prototype-stage projects change shape based on exactly this kind of input.
